Molly Wright drowned in Echo Lake when she was two. At least, that’s what her mother said. Margaret also claimed the Molly who came back out of the water was not her little girl.
After losing almost everything in a California wildfire, Molly accepts Margaret’s unexpected gift of the old lake house. Although she spent her life trying to escape Echo Lake and her mother’s madness, a fresh start in Michigan seems almost too good to pass up for Molly, her wife, Bert, and their eight-year-old daughter, Alice.
The lake is dry, the house is neglected, the woods are too quiet, and Molly finds herself remembering things she thought she had forgotten.
She wakes on the dock with muddy feet.
She hears singing across the water.
She glimpses something moving in the dry lakebed.
And then the water returns.
Soon Echo Lake is deeper than anyone has seen it in decades. Tourists come back. Scientists arrive. And Alice starts talking about the lake as though she knows it.
The deeper Molly digs into the past, the more impossible it becomes to separate memory from madness.
Because some memories won’t drown…
And some things that lurk beneath the water have been waiting a very long time.
